Pennsylvania spends $350K to preserve 141-acre Butler Township farm

A Butler County farm is among 29 farms that are benefiting from Pennsylvania’s latest round of farmland preservation.

The state Department of Agriculture invested $341,086, with Butler County chipping in $16,925, to permanently preserve farmland at the Hinch-Smith Family Farm, a 141-acre crop farm in Butler Township.

The Farmland Preservation Program, established in 1988, enables Pennsylvania to purchase conservation easements to preserve farmland. To date, the state has preserved more than 650,000 acres at over 6,500 farms.

In this latest round of farmland preservation, the state spent over $12 million to preserve 3,187 acres at 29 farms in 17 counties.
