College roundup: Butler grad Ana Malovich makes nationals in freshman wrestling season at Grand Valley State
Butler graduate and Grand Valley State freshman Ana Malovich, finished her first collegiate season with a 16-7 overall record, including a 6-2 record and 22.5 points earned in dual matches.
Throughout the season, she accumulated an impressive 38.5 tournament points, highlighted by four falls, eight tech falls and three decision victories. She secured a four-second pin, the fastest of the season of her first year.
Malovich also shined at regionals, finishing in the top four and earning a spot at nationals, where she went 3-2.
Hiram right setter/middle hitter Kyle Martini (Seneca Valley) and Thiel middle blocker Kaleb Proudfoot (Butler) were named as All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s volleyball first-teamers. Geneva right setter Andrew Ubinger (North Catholic) made the second team.
Butler graduate and IUP mid-distance runner Mike Formica ran the 1,500 meters in 3:45.62 last weekend, setting a PSAC record by .02 seconds.
The mark was previously shared by Shippensburg’s Gary Bicking (1980) and Edinboro’s Carl Leonard (1992).
Slippery Rock University distance runner Anna Igims was named the PSAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week after breaking the Rock’s record in the 5,000-meter run (16:38.85) at the Bison Ondoor Classic.
SRU sprinter Kanye Thompson earned a share of the same honor on the men’s side after winning the 100-meter dash (10.27 seconds) at the event. The time was the second fastest in the PSAC in the last 30 years. He also ran the anchor leg of the 400 relay team that won there.
