High school roundup: Butler baseball snaps skid; Knoch softball routs Freeport on Brooke Bastin’s slam
Butler snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 win Wednesday over Hempfield Area.
The victory pushes the Golden Tornado to 8-3.
Nolan Stefaniak struck out five in four innings for the win, allowing an unearned run in the process. He also went 1-for-2 at the plate and stole a base. Trent Best (2-for-4) doubled twice and scored two runs. Mavrik Clement (2-for-3) doubled and scored, and he earned the save with a strikeout in the seventh inning.
A Preston Richter single to left led to two runs in the third inning, and Butler never trailed after that.
Freeport 13, Knoch 4 — Kason Barker finished 2-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Yellowjackets’ offense pounded the Knights.
Gavin Tola (2-for-3) scored four times, and Luke Whitfield (3-for-4) doubled twice, scored thrice and drove in two. Gage Blystone fanned 11 in five innings for the win.
Seneca Valley 6, North Hills 0 — Andrew Malichky fired a two-hit shutout to lead the Raiders to their seventh win. He struck out eight and walked none.
Micah Olayer (1-for-3) tripled and drove in three runs, and Danny Drennan scored three times.
Knoch pounded out 11 runs in the sixth inning to win by mercy rule over Freeport 16-1.
Brooke Bastin hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth, her lone at-bat of the night, to force the run rule. That came an inning after Emersyn Jones smacked a two-run shot. Bastin scored a second run earlier in the game, and Jones finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs. She also punched out seven in six innings in the circle.
Lauren Clark (1-for-2) scored the Yellowjackets’ lone run.
Norwin 11, Butler 9 — Butler scored six runs in the last three innings to nearly mount a comeback. Shylee Karenbauer (2-for-4) tripled, scored twice and knocked in a run, while Mikayla Crouch (2-for-4) reached home three times and had an RBI.
Plum 12, Mars 1 (5 inn.) — Abby Robinson (1-for-3) scored, and Laura Craska (1-for-2) doubled and drove in a run in the Planets’ loss.
Beaver 6, North Catholic 5 — The Bobcats scored five runs in the fifth to win in a comeback. Kennedy Brown tripled and scored for the Trojanettes, while Samantha Foley went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Sharon 15, Slippery Rock 0 (3 inn.) — The Rockets did not record a hit in the shortened game.
Karns City girls 108, North Clarion County 32 — The Gremlins’ Phoebe Brandon won the 100-meter sprint (13.1 seconds) and high jump (4 feet, 6 inches) and was on the 4x100 relay that won in 57 seconds, while Naomi Venesky won the 400 (1:10.3), 200 (30.9) and joined the 4x400 relay win (5:18.2). Layla Colsey won the long jump with a 14-2.5 and was on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Karns City boys 94, North Clarion County 46 — KC’s Cole Johnston won the 110 hurdles in 18.7 seconds, the 100 in 11.9 and anchored the 4x100 relay’s win in 51.1. Kolby Blair won the shot put in 40-7 and the discus in 134-7. The Gremlins swept the relays, winning the 4x800 in 10:29.2 and the 4x400 in 3:48.9.
North Allegheny boys 77, Seneca Valley 73 — SV’s Dakari Payne won the 110 hurdles in 16.70 seconds and the triple jump in 40-3.75. Gavin Skarbek won the 400 in 49.81 and the 200 in 23.06
North Allegheny girls 79, Seneca Valley 71 — SV’s Kathryn Morrison swept the hurdles, winning the 100 in 16.33 and the 300 in 48.72. The Raiders claimed the 4x400 relay in 4:14.58 and 4x100 in 50.31.
OLSH 3, Mars 0 — The Planets were swept 25-16, 25-16, 25-21. No other stats were provided.
