Saxonburg finalizes extended police agreement with Oakland Township
SAXONBURG — Borough council officially extended an agreement to provide supplemental police services to Oakland Township at its monthly meeting on Tuesday night, April 15.
Oakland Township previously entered into a three-month trial agreement to accept police coverage from Saxonburg Police Department, which would supplement the police service already provided to the municipality by state police. The agreement lasted from Oct. 31, 2024 through early February 2025.
After a one-month delay, Oakland Township’s board of supervisors voted to extend the agreement with Saxonburg Police Department at its meeting April 2. Per the terms of the intergovernmental agreement, Saxonburg police will patrol Oakland Township for 20 hours per week.
According to Saxonburg borough manager Steven May, the agreement between Saxonburg and Oakland Township goes into effect on Wednesday, April 16, and lasts until the end of 2025.
“We look forward to a continued relationship with Summit and Oakland and anybody else who would be willing to participate,” May said.
In addition to Oakland Township, Saxonburg Police Department has a similar agreement in place to provide police services for Summit Township, and has recently engaged in talks with Winfield Township to do the same.
