BC3 sees minor cost adjustments through year to date
Butler County Community College’s board of trustees was presented with minor financial news, both positive and negative, at its April 16 board meeting.
Jake Friel, BC3’s vice president for administration and finance, told the board of trustees the college’s total revenues have been slightly higher than what was originally projected for the 2024-25 budget.
Friel said during the treasurer’s report that for the year to date, tuition revenue has been slightly higher than anticipated. The noncredit tuition revenue was over by around $100,000, something that Friel said was not expecting.
“In the financials you can see, we are above where we would be expected, according to the budget, significantly I should say. We are over by $100,000. That line has been above budget pretty much all year long, and it looks that way through the end of the year, so that’s a nice, unexpected surprise,” Friel said.
Friel said this could offset some small financial effects for this year from minor enrollment decline.
On the flip side, Friel told the board it will have to be prepared for some small cost increases, potentially next year, due to possible increases in inflation. According to the college’s expenditures to date, utilities costs were around $45,000 higher than expected.
Friel said for a long time, the college has had stable pricing for other discretionary types of funding, such as supplies, travel and utilities.
“We’re entering into a stage now where even some of the inflationary items that we’ve incurred, we’re seeing those now appear inside our financials. And especially utilities, we’re noticing significant increases with regards to gas, electric,” Friel said.
For reference, BC3’s budget expenditures and expected revenue for 2024-25 were $29,842,000.
