BUTLER TWP — The 300-meter hurdles did not go exactly as Adraya Baxter hoped, but the Butler senior came away with a couple positives.
Baxter ended a drought in the 100 hurdles, setting a new personal best for the first time in a while in the prelims and followed that up with a 15.73 to finish eighth in Thursday’s Butler Track and Field Invitational at Art Bernardi Stadium.
That was the first of two individual medals, the second coming in the better of her two races when she finished sixth in 47.02 in the 300 hurdles.
“Good,” Baxter said when asked how her 100 went. “I ran a better time in prelims than I did in finals, but the 100s aren’t necessarily the race of focus today. … I was happy to place in these.”

Baxter was less enthusiastic about her 300 time, she admitted. A combination of cooling weather late in the evening plus a lengthy break between her two runs (she was also set to run the 4x400 relay) also presented a challenge for someone who said she’s naturally anxious on race days.
“I was kind of hoping for a little bit faster of a time,” she said. “It’s so much of a mental game, you never really know what you’re gonna run.
Baxter didn’t medal last season at the invite. But her performances Thursday were among the highlights for the Golden Tornado girls at a meet that featured 94 high schools.
Aubrey Rock and Halle Swidzinski took home fourth (11 feet, 6 inches) and seventh (10-6) in the pole vault. The 4x800 finished fifth in 9:52.07.
Due to technical issues with the digital scoring system, full results as well as team champions were not available as of publication. The Butler Invite was not scheduled to end until after 11 p.m.

Lazzara nails big PR, wins long jump
It was a good day for North Catholic’s girls. Not only did the 4x100 win in 49.51, but its anchor, Anna Lazzara, shattered a previous best.
The sophomore leaped 18-4 in the long jump to win gold, beating her previous mark, set less than two weeks ago, by 6 inches.
“So good,” Lazzara said. “Oh my gosh, I knew I was right on the board and I just let myself fly. And it just felt so good, I knew it was gonna be a good jump.”
She entered the finals as the last seed. When she hit the board to start her jump, she heard her coach shout and new she had executed.
Lazzara also caught a break when Eden Christian’s Lara DeFazio’s final jump was marked 19 feet — except she had faulted.
“That would’ve been an amazing jump, she just got unlucky there,” Lazzara said.
She said she entered the year hoping to crack 17-10 this season.
“I guess just set the bar higher, maybe 19s, keep working, getting stronger,” Lazzara said.

Buterbaugh warming up
Thursday’s warmer afternoon temperatures did Karlee Buterbaugh some good.
The Knoch senior and Marshall commit fired a 133-2 in the girls javelin to finish second behind a meet-record 160-10 from Derry’s Sophia Mazzoni.
Buterbaugh said she’s focused on her consistency heading into the season, and that paid off with multiple throws clearing 130 feet.
“Carrying into this season, we’ve worked a lot on my steps this year instead of just going to throw, and consistency, and I’m starting to definitely get better at (that).
“I’m not at my peak yet. I think I can go a little farther and peak in the future.”
Mazzoni’s throw broke her previous Butler Invite record by 16 feet.
Knoch’s Kara Fennell
The Robert Morris University commit took home two medals Thursday, including a gold in the pole vault after she cleared 12 feet. Butler’s Aubrey Rock (fourth) was one of several behind Fennell at 11-6.
Fennell added a sixth in the triple jump later in the day with a 37-3.5.
