Lawrence County murder convict sentenced in unrelated Butler case

A New Castle man serving 25 to 50 years in prison for killing his mother in 2022 was sentenced Wednesday in Butler County Common Pleas Court to serve 2 to 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to fleeing from state police while driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Shane J. McDevitt, 39, was sentenced to serve 24 to 48 moths in state prison, a concurrent 3 to 6 months in prison and pay a $1,000 fine after pleading guilty to a felony count of fleeing from police and driving under the influence of a controlled substance. Police filed the charges following a Feb. 5, 2022 incident in Butler.

In addition, he was sentenced to concurrently serve 12 to 24 months in prison and pay $150 in restitution after pleading guilty to a theft by unlawful taking charge filed by state police following a May 7, 2022 incident in Clearfield Township.

McDevitt was sentenced remotely from the county prison by Senior Judge William Shaffer.

He is currently serving a 25-50 year prison sentence for the May 9, 2022 murder of his 65-year-old mother Cecelia Liposky in her Neshannock Township home in Lawrence County.

His mother died of blunt force trauma to the head. She was found lying on the living room floor with a bloody hammer and glass decoration nearby. Her car was missing, but his car was found parked in her garage. He was arrested following a high-speed chase in Allegheny County, according to media reports.

McDevitt pleaded guilty to felony counts of third-degree murder and strangulation, and two misdemeanor counts of possession of an instrument of crime. He was sentenced in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court on March 14.
