Man banned from county during parole

An Ohio man was ordered to stay out of Butler County when he is serving parole or probation as a part of his sentence for holding a Butler man hostage in his home while he sold drugs out of the home.

Jamel R. Patton Sr., 29, was sentenced Wednesday in Common Pleas Court to serve six months to 23-and-a-half months in the county jail followed by six months of probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment and false identification to law enforcement filed by Butler police following the Sept. 13 incident.

He was initially charged with three felony and three misdemeanor drug counts.

Assistant district attorney Robert Zanella said the plea agreement includes no contact with the victim and another condition that he is not allowed in the county while he is serving parole or probation.

Judge Timothy McCune included both conditions in Patton’s sentence. He said Patton was not allowed in the county.

Assistant public defender Joseph Smith said Patton has credit for having served 217 days in prison. Patton has been held in prison in lieu of $500,000 bail since his arrest on the day of the incident.

Police said Patton refused to let the victim leave his Third Avenue home for three days and threatened him while he sold drugs out of the home. The victim called police from a business on West Cunningham Street after sneaking out of the house, according to an affidavit.

Police told the Butler man to remain at the business while they went to his home to investigate. Officers heard someone inside the home, entered and found Patton, police said.

When asked to identify himself, Patton gave officers a false name, but police said they confirmed his name through his photo identification from Ohio.

Patton was found in possession of multiple bags of suspected controlled substances when he was searched before being placed in a holding cell, police said. The bags contained 4.71 grams of suspected fentanyl, 6.31 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 6.34 grams of suspected methamphetamine, two oxycodone chloride pills, five alprazolam pills, one amphetamine pill and 13 unidentified blue pills, according to the affidavit.

The victim identified the man as “Sir,” who police said they know to be Patton. He told police that Patton physically interfered with him leaving his home multiple times over about three days, according to the affidavit.

He told police that Patton told him he was not allowed to leave, he would rip his head off if he left, pushed him against a wall and told him about the consequences he would face if he left, according to the affidavit.
