Middlesex Township discusses traffic flow changes for busy intersection
Changes could be coming soon to the way vehicular traffic flows at a busy intersection in Middlesex Township.
During a township work session April 2, supervisors mentioned that they had recently entered discussions with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regarding ways to improve the traffic flow at the intersection of Route 8 and Denny Road/Dwellington Drive.
“I think they're looking at the traffic flow in that area,” said township supervisor Jeffrey Winkle. “There are some concerns from PennDOT just to improve the flow of traffic making those left hand movements on a busy state highway.”
According to Winkle, two solutions were brought up. One would involve realigning the lanes on Route 8 to create new turn lanes.
“They would restrike the center turn lane to show a defined left turn lane in the center turn lane,” Winkle said. “Once you delineate those turn lanes, I think that it would bring another level of safety to those left turn movements.”
The other would be far more elaborate, and effectively reconstruct the intersection. This would require purchasing land use rights from the neighboring residences and businesses. Winkle said that this method would take “a few years,” assuming businesses would even be onboard with the idea.
“The first option, (PennDOT) said they could do as early as later this year,” Winkle said. “Maybe even early this fall.”
