Margaret Hoffman

Hoffman

Margaret Marie Chaney Hoffman, 100, of Butler, passed away Saturday evening, April 19, 2025, under hospice care at her granddaughter Farrah’s residence.

Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Washington, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wilmot and Rozetta Sprowls Chaney.

She was a member of the St John’s Reformed Church, where in the past she was an Elder, a Sunday school teacher and served on the board.

She worked in education, and received her bachelor's degree and master's degree from Penn State. She worked as an extension agent in Mercer County; then for 15 years as a home economics teacher at Victory Joint High School in Clintonville; and lastly, she served as a consultant in the Department of Education, serving Western Pennsylvania and retiring in 1991.

Margaret enjoyed people and traveling. She served as president of Meridian Area Retired Citizen (MARC), former president of Butler Kiwanis and Butler County Home Economics Association, and was a member of the Mt. Chestnut Woman’s Club. She belonged to the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). She enjoyed bowling and belonged to many leagues in the Butler area.

After retirement Margaret was an avid traveler. She will be remembered for organizing many trips for over 20 years — both bus trips and overseas trips — for nonprofit organizations.

She is survived by her son, Larry (Hope) Hoffman of Butler; grandchildren, Farrah (Todd) McKinney, Jocelyn Williams, Brandon (Kayla) Hoffman, Rebecca (Hector) Villeges and Stefanie Cunningham; three step-grandchildren, Ashley (Joel) Steele, Kellie (Mark) Smedberg and Nathan (Sara) Walters; seven great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and her Chihuahua, Chelsae.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Hoffman, whom she married Aug. 30, 1947, and who passed away Sept. 1, 2006; her daughter, Sharon Reed; her brother, Howard Chaney; and her beloved Maltese, Bella.
