High school sports roundup: Aaron Lunn, Tanner Pry lead Butler baseball to win over Central Catholic

Aaron Lunn and Tanner Pry combined to give Butler’s baseball team a solid pitching performance Friday in a 5-2 win against Central Catholic.

Lunn worked the first five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Pry permitted one baserunner in two scoreless innings to close the game.

Boden Lenyk, Trent Best, Preston Richter and Nash Cuffman each tallied two of the Golden Tornado’s nine hits.

Butler (10-4, 6-3 WPIAL Section 1-6A) begins a three-game series against Seneca Valley (8-6, 5-4) on Monday. First pitch is 5:30 p.m. at Pullman Park.

Freeport 16, East Allegheny 1 — Michael Hanz continued his superb season, going 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring two for the Yellowjackets in this four-inning, non-section triumph.

Hanz and Kason Barker both homered for Freeport (8-6).

Luke Whitfield, Gavin Tola and Cam Zigo all had two hits and combined for eight runs scored and seven batted in.

Karns City 10, Hickory 0 — Joey O’Donnell had a triple and three RBIs as the Gremlins (6-4) rolled. Colton Christie had a pair of runs driven in during the victory.

Adam Manuel earned the win on the mound, going five innings, striking out five and allowing just two hits.

North Allegheny 9, Seneca Valley 6 — A seven-spot in the fourth inning cost the Raiders (8-6, 5-4 WPIAL Section 1-6A) in a section loss.

Ryan Piekutoski (2-for-3), Wes Conville (3-for-4) and Mason Fisher (2-for-5) accounts for seven of Seneca Valley’s nine hits. Fisher doubled, scored and drove in a run; Piekutoski scored twice and had an RBI; and Conville had an RBI.

Softball

Lily Staab belted two home runs and collected five RBIs in Moniteau’s 9-2 defeat of Lakeview.

Lexi McGhee and Sydney DeMatteis both doubled, with the former driving home two runs.

Canon-McMillan 6, Butler 0 — Big Macs’ pitcher Brooke Bumer struck out 14, walked just one and surrendered three hits.

Mikayla Crouch, Kaylan Garbinski and Kierra Smith each singled for the Golden Tornado (2-14, 2-11).

Postponements

Multiple games were postponed due to Friday’s storms.

In baseball, North Catholic’s home game vs. Armstrong will be played at a later date. The Trojanattes’ softball game vs. Hampton is postponed until Tuesday, and Seneca Valley softball will host Mt. Lebanon on Saturday.

Seneca Valley girls lacrosse’s game against Quaker Valley was suspended in the third quarter with the Raiders trailing 6-1 due to thunderstorms. The game is a no-contest.
