High school roundup: Kevin Shriver, relays lead Butler boys to 4th at South Fayette Invite
Butler’s boys finished fourth with 46 points and the girls finished 20th at Saturday’s South Fayette Track and Field Invitational.
The meet also included Knoch and North Catholic.
Golden Tornado sprinter Kevin Shriver had another strong day, running 10.95 seconds in the 100-meter dash to win first by .02. He then finished eighth in the 200 (22.78) behind Christopher Rubcic (sixth, 22.68) and Carter Ekas (22.72).
And the boys relays again took home three medals, with the 4x100 winning in 42.78, the 4x400 in 3:22.55 and the 4x800 finishing fifth (8:40.32).
Zachary Slear (4:28.91) Shae Sintz (4:36.57) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 1600.
On the girls side, hurdler Audray Baxter took home two medals with silver in the 300 (47.77) and fourth in the 100 (15.93). Gracyn Vardy finished just short of two: tying for fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches) and finishing ninth in long jump (15-4.5).
North Catholic boys tied for eighth (27 points), and Knoch tied for 17th (18); Knoch girls tied for 14th (17), and North Catholic finished 27th (five)
Trojanettes sophomore Audra Lazzara nearly took home four medals: she snagged third in the 100 hurdles (15.49), fifth in the long jump (16-6), eighth in the 100 dash (13.29) and just missed the podium in the 300 hurdles with 10th (51.69).
Knoch’s Karlee Buterbaugh won javelin with a throw of 125-6 and took seventh in the shot put (31-5). Makenzie Kurtz and Neah Ewing also medaled in the javelin with throws of 98-2 and 96-5, respectively.
Knoch’s boys medalists included: Austin Friedline in the 300 hurdles (third, 41.54), Kaden Spencer in triple jump (fifth, 40-8.25), Troy Slater in discus (fifth, 126-10) and in shot put (fifth, 45-10).
NC’s Tyler Carroll and Jack Steineman went 1-2 in the boys 3200, crossing the finish line in 9:47.89) and 9:51.07, respectively. Ryan Snyder took bronze in the long jump (20-7) and missed a second medal with a 5-6 in the high jump. The boys 4x800 finished sixth in 8:41.28.
Butler boys volleyball went 8-3 in sets and beat the hosts in the Hempfield Area Tournament for the championship Saturday.
The Golden Tornado went 3-0 in the playoffs, knocking out Cambridge Springs 25-20 in the quarterfinals, Norwin 25-14 in the semifinals and Hempfield 25-9 in the final.
Andrew Slaugenhoup and Alfons Semmler led the Tornado with 34 and 32 kills throughout the day. Mason McCall had 71 assists, and Kole Wojner dished out 55. Mason Anderson and McCall also had 30 digs. Alec Teff led in aces (eight) and Zane Steimer in blocks (six).
Mars beat Twin Valley 8-7 Saturday. No other stats were provided.
