The Butler Art Center & Gallery’s Student Art Exhibit garnered more art submissions from grade school students this year than most other years in the past.

Shirley McCauley, a member of the Associated Artists of Butler County, said she was surprised by not only the quantity, but the level of quality of art submissions received by the gallery on Butler’s Main Street. Overall, 96 student artists submitted to the gallery, bringing the total number of submissions to 160 this year.

“We intentionally scheduled this for after the (Fine Arts & Beyond) Showcase to get more people involved,” McCauley said. “This is always a big show for us.”

The Student Art Exhibit opened at the center Friday, April 18, and the submitted pieces will remain on display through Saturday, May 3. For the show, students from 11 schools, as well as homeschooled students, entered submissions, and the Associated Artists group awarded prizes for different categories of art as well as for different age ranges.

Students submitted 2D and 3D art, so the gallery is populated with paintings, paper mâche sculptures, pottery ad more.
