High school sports roundup: Mars, Knoch baseball win in walk-offs

Danny Murray’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home Luke Goodworth with the deciding run in Mars’ 5-4 baseball win over West Allegheny on Monday.

It was Murray’s third hit of the game.

Grady Spiegle had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Zach Rozman singled and drove in two for the Planets (6-8, 2-5).

Kyle Krause struck out seven, walked two and allowed four runs (one earned) in six innings on the mound for Mars. Braden Schmitt worked a scoreless seventh to earn the victory.

Knoch 2, Derry 1 (nine innings) — Kaden Dreher’s single scored Hunter Lang with the winning run in this walk-off win for the Knights (9-9, 5-4).

Lang tripled, one of four hits for Knoch, and Cooper Allison had the other RBI.

Zane Pacek worked overtime for the win, surrendering one run on five hits in a complete game.

Freeport 7, Yough 2 — Michael Hanz collected three hits, with a double and home run, scored three runs and had two driven in for the Yellowjackets (9-6, 5-4).

Luke Whitfield doubled with a run scored and one RBI.

Owen Westendorf pitched a complete game in the victory, striking out six and walking none.

Softball

Seneca Valley became the first team this season to top WPIAL-leading Hempfield as the Raiders scored a 2-1 win at Raider Field.

Lexie Hames tallied 18 strikeouts, one walk and one hit allowed. The Spartans (14-1, 10-1) scored an unearned run.

Bella Gross doubled and Lauren Folino had an RBI for the Raiders (12-2, 10-2). Neve Miller singled and scored.

Central Valley 13, North Catholic 6 — Natalia Rushak and Kennedy Brown both homered for the Trojanettes (6-6, 3-5) in this section loss.

Boys lacrosse

Mars overwhelmed Quaker Valley with a 19-4 decision. No other details were available.
