The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 7, 8ER, is marking the start of boating season with the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony at 2 p.m. on May 24 on Lake Arthur at Moraine State Park. The centuries-old maritime custom is meant to grant divine protection to participating mariners and their watercraft.
The event is open to the public, and all boaters, regardless of religious affiliation, are encouraged to participate. The ceremony will take place at the Davis Hollow Marina.
During the ceremony, examiners from the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free vessel safety checks to ensure that boats meet all safety requirements and are carrying the necessary safety equipment.
