Seneca Valley moves classes online Friday, reacts to TikTok threat
Seneca Valley students will learn virtually Friday after an anonymous social media account made apparent threats of violence.
The district, in an early-morning alert to parents Friday, announced all students K-12 will learn via synchronous learning, and the start of school will be delayed by two hours.
“This decision comes after we were made aware late Thursday evening of a potential new threat posted on TikTok,” the alert reads in part. “The threat, which was reported to us by students and parents, was made via an anonymous account on the social media platform.”
The anonymous TikTok account, which appears to have been deleted, made three posts Thursday. One stated, in part, “so many deaths will be caused,” with the claim the account would “be live streaming tomorrow (Friday) morning on … Instagram.”
Another, which was uploaded twice, said the account was “ready for tomorrow” and it was “time for the purge at school.”
In addition, the account appeared to follow several Seneca Valley students and accounts mentioning the district.
Seneca Valley's move to virtual learning comes a day after non-credible rumors of violence at the district spread rapidly on social media, prompting many parents to retrieve their children from the secondary campus during the school day.
