Hundreds of bags of heroin, a pound of marijuana and more than an ounce of crack cocaine were seized Tuesday night from an apartment in the 500 block of West Cunningham Street.

Along with the suspected drugs worth a combined $15,000 on the street, Butler County Drug Task Force officers found more than $4,300 in currency at the home.

Both residents — 49-year-old Richard M. Crawford and 26-year-old Melinda I. Claypoole — were arrested after officers served a search warrant at their apartment.

“(Crawford is) a significant dealer,” said county Detective Tim Fennell, who heads the task force.

Along with the tenants, officers arrested two neighbors — 39-year-old Gary L. McMasters Jr., and his live-in girlfriend, 27-year-old Donna Ann Larkin — in connection with the investigation.

All four are in the Butler County Prison.

Investigators suspect Crawford and Claypoole handled the drug operation from their home. McMasters and Larkin helped get the product to others by “middling” drug deals, Fennell said.

The case evolved information from other drug investigations.

“(Drug suspects) we interviewed told us where they were buying their dope at,” Fennell said.

The task force beginning in October put Crawford and Claypoole's apartment under surveillance and used informants to make drug buys there.

The evidence gathered culminated in the search warrant that was served at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Crawford, a double amputee who uses a wheelchair, and Claypoole were both at home.

The search turned up more than 1,100 stamp bags of suspected heroin, about 16 ounces of suspected marijuana and 32 grams of suspected crack, according to court documents.

Along with the currency, officers found a digital scale and drug packaging materials. Two cell phones were also seized.

Crawford and Claypoole were arrested. Afterward, officers arrested McMasters and Larkin at the couple's apartment on Third Avenue.

McMasters and Larkin are accused in the investigation of selling 10 bags of heroin to a police informant for $100 on Oct. 12 outside the West End Plaza.

Crawford and Claypoole are both charged with multiple counts each of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

They also are charged with conspiracy to traffic drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMasters and Larkin are both charged with conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance.

Additionally, McMasters is charged with delivery of and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance.

Crawford is in prison on $75,000 bail while Claypoole and McMasters are jailed on $50,000 bail each. Larkin is incarcerated on $25,000 bail.
