Mary R. Armes Hogg

Mary Rosalie Armes Hogg, 82, died Tuesday after an eight-month illness.

Born in State College, Centre County, April 15, 1926, she was the daughter of Monroe Jason and Fredda Violeta Gavitte Armes.

Mary graduated in 1944 from State College High School and received a bachelor's degree in architecture from Pennsylvania State University, where she had the distinction of being the only female member of the Class of 1948, College of Architecture.

She was an architect for Boyd Kapp in State College and Howard & Murphy in Butler and later designed several homes in Slippery Rock and New Wilmington. She taught art in the Slippery Rock Elementary and Middle schools for 34½ years before retiring in 1993.

Mrs. Hogg was a member of the National and Pennsylvania State Education associations and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. She was a longtime member of the Butler County Associated Artists and the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle and served on the board of the Music & Arts Festival while it was held at Armco Park.

In retirement, she was an instructor of drawing and watercolor at the Institute for Learning at Slippery Rock University and at her home. Her paintings have been shown in many area art exhibits and at the Dragonfly Studio in Slippery Rock.

Mary was a member of the American Legion Post 393 Auxiliary and served as the Americanism chairman for years. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir, belonged to the Adult Class and Women's Association and served as an elder and clerk of session.

She met her future husband, Theodore Harvey Hogg, while they were undergraduates at Pennsylvania State University. They were married from June 11, 1948, until Ted's death on Nov. 7, 1986. They enjoyed returning to their alma mater, especially to attend Nittany Lion football games as they did for three decades. Mary and Ted lived and raised their family at the Hogg Homestead and Century Farm, established in 1814 in Slippery Rock Township.

Surviving are a brother, Monroe Jason Armes and his wife, Jane, of State College; a daughter, Nancy Ruth Hogg Kneupper and her husband, Ted, of Slippery Rock; two sons, Calvin John and his wife, Becky, of Grangeville, Idaho, and James Monroe and his wife, Cathy, of Erie; six grandchildren, Nathan, Kelly, who also is an architect, Travis and Kathleen Hogg, Alexander and Zachary Kneupper; and 24 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard, and a sister, Ruth.

<B>HOGG</B> — Mary was known for her smile, her cheerfulness and her steadfast, positive outlook on life. In this spirit, family and friends are invited to share fond memories at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B> in Slippery Rock. Viewing hours for Mary Rosalie Armes Hogg, who died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Fraley, CLP, and Elder Diane Whitman, certified lay pastor, both of Friendship Parish, Slippery Rock, officiating. Burial will be at the Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to Grove Manor Nursing Home, 435 N. Broad St., Grove City, PA 16127.
