Janet Muir Ewing Harris

Janet Muir Ewing Harris, 95, formerly of Slippery Rock and a resident of Grove Manor Nursing Home, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the nursing home.

Born Aug. 14, 1909, in Bridgeton, a district of Glasgow, Scotland, she was a daughter of William Patrick Ewing and Jeanie Liddell Brown. She is the second and longest-lived of their six children.

Mrs. Harris was baptized in the Church of Scotland.

She believed her given middle name acknowledged a relationship to John Muir, the pioneering naturalist. Both had early families in Dunbar, Scotland, but confirming a clear relationship has proven elusive.

Janet, or Nettie as she was called by her family and friends, emigrated to the United States twice. First, in 1930 and again in 1948 with her husband and family.

The family lived in several locations, including New Jersey and California.

Mrs. Harris often worked in service-related jobs with her husband.

In the fall of 2001, the couple made their last move to Slippery Rock to live near their eldest son.

Mrs. Harris enjoyed homemaking, knitting, reading and examining her family albums.

After being widowed, she regularly attended the Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Harris and his wife, Nancy, of Slippery Rock and Bruce Harris and his wife, Rosanne, of Flower Mound, Texas; five grandchildren, Jason, Julie Castro, Scott, Jennifer Brady and David; and seven great-grandchildren.

HARRIS - A public memorial service for Janet Muir Ewing Harris, who died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, will be observed at 5:30 p.m. today at Center Presbyterian Church. The Rev. David McCabe, church pastor, will officiate. In addition to visiting with friends at the church, the family also will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the SMITH FUNERAL HOME at 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.
