Donald McLean

Donald W. McLean, 67, of Grove City passed away Friday evening in his home after recurrence of melanoma that was first diagnosed in 2009.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1947, in Grove City to Scottish immigrants, David McLean and Elizabeth McIntosh McLean.

Don was a 1965 graduate of Grove City High School and earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Grove City College in 1969. He played on the golf team in both high school and college.

After college graduation, he enlisted and spent four years in the U.S. Navy. During that time he attended Russian Language School for the Navy, and intercepted Russian communications from Adak, off the coast of Alaska. While stationed in Scotland, he got to know many of his Scottish family and was very proud of that heritage.

Don worked in purchasing at Interstate Pipe & Supply in Clintonville and retired in 2011 after 37 years.

As an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City, he formerly served on various committees, taught Sunday school and was an usher.

Don was known for his quick wit and dry humor. He had a passion for golf and served as secretary of the City League for many years. Dutch McIntyre was a mentor and father figure who was instrumental in helping develop his love for golf with the Junior Golf League at the Pine Grove Golf Course. He also was involved with and helped coach his sons in Little League.

Don enjoyed Sudoku puzzles, the more challenging the better.

His wife, the former Linda Hutchison of Clintonville, who he married on Oct. 11, 1980, survives at home. Also surviving are his two sons, Nathaniel McLean and his wife, Lianna, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Andrew McLean of Rochester, N.Y.; his granddaughter, Kayla May McLean of Los Angeles; his brother, Jim McLean and his wife, Norma, of Grove City, and his nieces and nephews in the United States and Scotland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dave and Boyd, and his sister, Maize, all of Scotland.

McLean — A memorial service for Donald W. McLean, who passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St., Grove City, with the Rev. Howard Greenfield and the Rev. Willard Morse officiating.The family will greet friends following the service. A lunch and time of fellowship will follow.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Melanoma Center, UPMC Hillman, 5230 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232, or to the Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St., Grove City, PA 16127.Arrangements are by the Cunningham Funeral Home, Grove City.
