Apologetic woman sentenced for burning down her home
In tears Christine Lipke told a Butler County judge today that she forgives her mother for burning down her home.
Jennifer Brown, according to her oldest daughter, was “very sick,” overmedicated and misdiagnosed at the time of the February 2014 fire.
According to court records, the 43-year-old told investigators that she burned down the small home on Etna Road in Slippery Rock Township — a rental property — because she didn’t like the conditions and wanted Lipke out of there.
Court records say Lipke and her two young children were not at home and no one was injured in the fire. Brown reportedly told investigators that she lit a bedsheet with a lighter, then walked to visit a friend.
According to court records, Brown was a voluntary patient at the Clarion Psychiatric Center when she first confessed. After her arrest, prosecution was delayed several months while Brown was treated at Torrence State Hospital, and she was declared temporarily incompetent to stand trial.
Brown this spring returned to the Butler County Prison and the criminal justice system, and on June 9 she pleaded guilty to a first-degree felony count of arson.
Judge William Shaffer sentenced Brown on Tuesday to the terms of an arrangement made by prosecutors: 14 to 36 months in prison with 505 days credit for time already served.
She will be on probation now and pay about $81,200 in restitution to the home’s owner.
Brown in court apologized to her own family as well as the home’s owner, who did not attend the hearing.
