Butler wrestlers come up short
Butler wrestling coachScott Stoner has been lobbying for years for a fourth wrestler in each weight class to advance to the state tournament out of the WPIAL.
He got two more reasons to hold to that position Saturday.
Alex Evanoff, a 145-pound senior, and 152-pound senior Josh Pascazi each placed fourth in the WPIAL Class AAA Southeast Regional Saturday.
Only the top three make it to the PIAA championships in Hershey. That left Evanoff and Pascazi, who combined to win 72 matches this season, on the outside looking in.
"It's been the top three for years," Stoner said. "Not getting anyone to Hershey — that's pretty tough."
Evanoff lost a 5-0 decision to Matt Hundenski of Hopewell in the consolation final.
Evanoff finished the season 39-3 — one of the best records in the state of anyone not going to the PIAA championships.
Evanoff finished his Golden Tornado career with 101 wins — second on the all-time list. He may be chosen to the WPIAL all-star team, which will wrestle the state all-stars in the Dapper Dan Classic
Pascazi, who had 33 wins this season and 91 in his career, fell to Nick Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park 3-2. In the semifinals, Pascazi fell to eventual WPIAL champion Troy Reaghard of WestAllegheny.
Butler had seven wrestlers advance toSaturday's action.
Most of those wrestlers, includingfreshman Cole Baxter who also won 33 matches, will return.
"I'm more excited now that when I got here 15 years ago," Stoner said.
Mars' 130-pounder Luke Selker placed fourth to advance to the Class AA Southwest Regional championships this weekend in Johnstown.Selker lost to ColinSheridan of Mount Pleasant in the consolation final, but still advanced to the regional. The top three in that tournament will advance to the PIAA championships.
