A white Christmas, indeed!

The snowy forecast made good on its promise, bringing a white Christmas to Butler and the rest of the region.

Rainfall began to turn into hail and ice late Thursday evening before finally becoming snow, according to the National Weather Service forecast. By around 10 a.m. Friday about 3 inches of snow covered the county, with Lawrence and Mercer counties getting more, around to 4 or 5 inches. For Pittsburgh, it was the most snowfall on Christmas since 1935.

State police and other authorities reported a quiet Thursday night and Friday morning with little to no accidents.

Shannon Hefferan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Butler could expect an additional inch and a half to 2 inches of snow during the rest of Christmas Day. She said the weather advisory that was put into place Thursday evening is expected to lapse as planned by 1 p.m. Friday, if not earlier.

“The snow is very fine and dry, which is nice for shoveling but it will blow around and on the road,” Hefferan said.
