Winterfest to offer fun in Saxonburg on Saturday

A new event in the southeastern part of the county will provide some fun in the cold sun on Saturday.

Winterfest will be held from noon to 7 p.m. on Main Street in Saxonburg, and will offer food, vendors, entertainment and, most importantly, a break from the winter doldrums.

Miranda Virone, owner of Blue Jar Candle Co. on Main Street in Saxonburg, said the event is being planned by a committee of entrepreneurs and others in the borough.

She said many community partners are sponsoring Winterfest, which she hopes will become an annual event.

Winterfest, which will not close Main Street, will host 20 artisan and craft vendors from noon to 4 p.m. on the sidewalks, a mobile farm and petting zoo at Saxonburg Heritage Wine Cellar, free carriage rides from 4 to 7 p.m., live chainsaw ice carving at 5 p.m. in the South Butler Community Library’s courtyard, and baton and fire twirlers at 6 p.m. at the library courtyard.

Those who attend also will have multiple food options at Winterfest.

Virone said a Souper Bowl soup contest will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Participants pay $5 to sample the creations of 12 local soupmakers.

“They will vote for their favorite soup and that soupmaker will win the Golden Ladle,” Virone said.

Beverages and bread also will be available during the Souper Bowl, she said.

Five food trucks will offer hot dogs, chocolate confections, snow cones and ice cream, kettle corn and specialty hummus at First Commonwealth Bank, Virone said.

Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market will set up a warming tent at Winterfest for those who need to defrost their fingers and toes at the event.

Most businesses will have extended hours that evening as well, Virone said.

“Our slogan is ‘Beat the brrrrr in the ‘Burg,’” Virone said “We want to give people a little something to do after the long months of winter.”
