Fire department purchasing new equipment with grant
The city of Butler received a $15,000 Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service grant from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner, which will replace aging equipment.
Butler Bureau of Fire chief Chris Switala said at Thursday’s City Council meeting that the money is going to be used to buy a thermal imaging camera and a ventilation fan. Switala said thermal imaging cameras are used in fire situations to locate fires inside walls and people.
“We are using it to replace a thermal imaging camera that is 13 years old, having battery issues and operational issues,” Switala said. “The ventilation fan, a lot of the old fans we have are gasoline powered ... we’re going to get a battery-powered fan.”
Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council announced that the bridge on West Penn Street will be closed starting Monday for a period of eight to 12 weeks for repairs.
Mayor Bob Dandoy said the bridge repair is part of the Sullivan Run project that is fixing the stream that runs through the city, and the bridge on West Brady Street is also closed for this reason.
“Both of those bridges are in terrible condition, and that will replace both of them,” said city building code official John Evans. “You’ll be able to use West New Castle Street.”
The council also decided to wait to choose a new electrical supplier. The city’s current electrical supplier agreement is in effect until November, and the meeting agenda had two options to buy from AEP Energy: a 36-month agreement at a lower rate and one for 12 months at a slightly higher rate.
The council members agreed that waiting the prices out could lead to the city getting a better rate for an electrical agreement.
