Injured Butler officer back on duty
Butler City police Officer Michael Sulerud, who was critically stabbed Aug. 24, went back on duty with the department Friday.
Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy said at Thursday’s meeting of city council that Sulerud was cleared to start work with the department once again after undergoing surgery for his injuries.
“That just makes me feel really good,” Dandoy said. “More prayers and good wishes to him and everyone at the entire police department.”
Early on the morning of Aug. 24, police received reports that John Ebberts, of Butler, was jumping in and out of traffic on the 300 block of West Jefferson Street.
According to state police, Sulerud addressed Ebberts, who stabbed him multiple times before the officer shot Ebberts, killing him.
Sulerud is a Marine Corps veteran and was a three-year veteran of the city police department at the time of the incident.
Sulerud received treatment at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, and was released Sept. 1. He has been recovering from surgery and was cleared to resume duty Friday.
