Michael Salak

Michael Salak, 89, of Butler, formerly of Lyndora, passed away Friday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Born Jan. 25, 1926, in Lyndora, he was a son of the late Andrew and Anna (Herman) Salak.

He retired in 1988 from the maintenance department at Armco Steel following 40 years service.

He was a member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Lyndora and also a charter member and former chaplain of the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora in 1945.

He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics Bocchi Ball and was an active Bocchi player for the Alameda Park and Travel team.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, the Armored Division.

Surviving are his two daughters, Roberta Collins and her companion, Robert Stepanovich, of Panama City, Fla., and Theresa (Ronald) Rivers of Chicora; two grandchildren, Travis Rivers and Jessica Schera; two great-grandchildren, Natalie Rene Rivers and Camryn Elizabeth Rivers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine “Cookie” Salak, who passed away July 26, 2014; four sisters; and three brothers.

SALAK — Friends of Michael Salak, who died Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Wednesday at St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Butler, with the Rev. James Murphy, pastor, to officiate.
