Mars teen dies in car, truck crash

FRANKLIN PARK, Allegheny County — A Mars teenager died Sunday morning when his car collided with a tanker truck on Interstate 79 by the Wexford exit ramp.

Ibn Yahya Salim Hoffman, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.

A second Mars teenager was injured.

Trent S. Nelson, 18, was taken by Franklin Park ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of moderate injuries. He was in good condition this morning.

Both are Mars High School graduates.

Hoffman graduated in 2010, and Nelson graduated in June.

Findley state police report Hoffman’s Acura TL was northbound on I-79 about 5:30 a.m. when it drifted into the grass median. To gain control of the car, Hoffman swerved to the right then back to the left, traveling across the median into the southbound lane into the path of the Kenworth T800 Tanker.

The truck driver, Bradley Airesman, 39, of Berlin in Somerset County, swerved, but the front driver’s side of the car hit the front of the truck.

Debris from the car hit a third vehicle, a Suzuki Kizashi driven by Robert Trimbur, 41, of Butler.

Airesman had minor injuries. Trimbur was not injured.

All three southbound lanes of I-79 were closed for nearly four hours while the wreckage was cleared.
