Clay Township standoff ends peacefully

CLAY TWP — A police standoff at a home on Route 308 ended peacefully early this morning when the suspect apparently gave himself up, authorities said.

Walter S. Kradel, 29, barricaded himself inside the house, said state police, who were seeking him for allegedly violating a protection from abuse order.

Police learned Kradel was at the house at 1 a.m., but he refused to come out, prompting the standoff.

The state police Special Emergency Response Team was called after troopers closed a portion of Route 308 about 4:15 a.m.

Police notified the Butler County Communication Center, which dispatched the West Sunbury and Unionville volunteer fire departments to help man the traffic closure between Mahood Road and Route 183, also known as Euclid Road.

Following talks with police negotiators, Kradel was caught without incident just before 7:30 a.m. He was placed in the county prison in connection with the PFA violation.
