Council irons out requirements for Father Marinaro project

The renovation project planned for Father Marinaro Park is changing slightly.

The project was planned to add a new baseball field and renovate the existing one, and add a new basketball court, parking lot and playground at the park. The project will no longer install a new baseball field, but will instead create a multi-purpose field that can be used for soccer and football.

Butler City Council discussed the project at a forum meeting Thursday, where Mayor Bob Dandoy said the city will record an environmental covenant on the property’s deed. The covenant signifies that the project plan complies with requirements from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which also issued a $108,000 grant to the city to fund the park’s updates.

Dandoy said the DCNR requires municipalities to make plans to ensure workers won’t be harmed when working on projects.

“What we have to make sure is if we hire you to dig down in there that we have protections for you,” Dandoy said. “That’s the plan that we have to put forth in order to receive the grant and move forward.”

Work on the project should commence this year.

The council also discussed two requests from the YMCA to close city roads for events, including the Butler Road Race event and the Turkey Trot, which both use downtown streets for several hours.

The road race will take place the morning of June 18, and the Turkey Trot will take place the morning of Nov. 5.

Dandoy said the city is getting notified about more upcoming events that are taking place throughout the year.

“I think it’s important to have these kinds of events,” he said. “I just think that contributes a vibrancy to the city and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
