Sarah Melissa McGarvey Shaffer

Sarah Melissa McGarvey Shaffer, 99, formerly of Bradys Bend, passed away Sunday following complications from surgery.

Sarah was born in Bradys Bend, and most recently lived in Jenison, Mich., but was a longtime resident of both Butler and Indiana, Pa.

While living in Indiana, she was employed as a clerk typist at Indiana University of Pennsylvania until she retired.

Sarah is survived by her sister, Hattie Williams of Karns City; her daughter, Suzanne Strauss of Jenison, Mich.; and her son, David and his wife, Patricia, of Forked River, N.J.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Kim Marshall and her husband, Darrell, of Hopkins, Mich., Andrea Bareis of Chelsea, Mich., Nadia Yungk of Alexandria, Va., Jessica Shaffer of Manahawkin, N.J., and Corey Shaffer and his wife, Ashley, of Absecon, N.J.

Sarah also has eight great-grandchildren; and a ninth great-grandson expected in November.

Preceding Sarah in death were her husband, Lee Allen; her daughter, Mary Lee; and three sisters, Madge Bowser, Alda Edwards and Eleanor Hazlett.

Sarah was a devout Christian and has gone to be with her Savior in heaven.

SHAFFER — Friends of Sarah Melissa McGarvey Shaffer, who died Sunday, July 15, 2018, will be received from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hile Funeral Home of Karns City, 128 Main St., Karns City.A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Glenn Kohlhepp, former pastor of the Karns City United Methodist Church, officiating.
