The Butler County Drug Task Force arrested two men following a Friday morning bust in Butler.

Following the bust at around 11:10 a.m. on American Avenue, police arrested Jonathan M. Perez, 19, of Youngstown, Ohio, and charged him with selling drugs.

In addition to three felony counts of drug sales, Perez is also charged with felony criminal conspiracy and misdemeanor drug possession.

Police also arrested Mark A. Sowa, 62, of Butler, who they say allowed Perez to sell drugs from his home. He is charged with felony criminal conspiracy and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia possession.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned both men Friday afternoon. Both were placed in Butler County Prison, Perez with a $100,000 bond and Sowa with $50,000 bond.

According to charging documents, police were monitoring Sowa’s home with a signed search warrant in hand, when they saw Perez leaving the house and getting into the passenger seat of an awaiting vehicle.

Police conducted a traffic stop. The man driving the vehicle gave police permission to search the vehicle, where one piece of folded notebook paper containing drugs was found behind the driver’s seat.

“This paper contained crack cocaine and is consistent with the manner in which Perez typically packages his narcotics for sale,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

According to police, during their searches of Perez, they found two cellphones, $1,500 cash and 35.6 grams of a combination of drugs, all packaged in individual portions for sale.

Police said there was about 22.37 grams of crack cocaine, 6.69 grams of powder cocaine, 2.39 grams of suspected heroin and 1.25 grams of an unknown blue powder.

Police then entered 201 American Ave., and they found Sowa inside. Police said they also found several sheets of notebook paper consistent with the type used to package the drugs found in the car Perez was arrested from.

Police said Sowa spoke with officer at the scene.

“Sowa also advised that Perez paid him in crack cocaine in order to use Sowa’s residence for the purpose of trafficking narcotics,” police said.

Both men have preliminary hearing scheduled March 21 before District Judge William Fullerton.
