Teen breaks leg at McConnells Mill
PERRY TOWNSHIP, Lawrence County — A teenager suffered a broken femur Saturday afternoon when he fell off a rock face in McConnells Mill State Park.
Jake Weiland, assistant park manager, said the 16-year-old boy fell 10 to 15 feet near the Breakneck Bridge.
“He fell off a rock face while he was recreating with friends and family,” Weiland said.
The accident was reported to the Butler County 911 dispatch center at 1:47 p.m. after the Lawrence County 911 center was notified.
Emergency crews spent the afternoon pulling the teen out.
“It took awhile to extract him,” Weiland said. “There’s never an easy way down a rock face.”
The boy, whose name was not released, was flown by helicopter to an unspecified hospital.
The Lawrence County Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by the Portersville Volunteer Fire Company and EMS.
Crews cleared the scene at 5:33 p.m.
Weiland said Saturday’s accident was similar to many others that happen in parks — the victim was inexperienced in rock climbing and did not use any climbing gear.
