Charles F. “Big Pop” Ryan

Charles F. “Big Pop” Ryan, 90, of Chicora died at 3:11 a.m. Tuesday at Sugar Creek Rest in Worthington.

He was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Butler to the late Francis Bernard Ryan and the late Mary Irene Angert Ryan.

A veteran of World War II, he served his country proudly in the U.S. Army, specifically in the Normandy Invasion, also called Operation Overlord and known popularly as D-Day, which launched June 6, 1944, and became the most celebrated battle of the war.

After the war, he was a foreman in the paint department at Pullman Standard in Butler for 28 years, retiring in 1981. He then drove 'THE BUS' in Butler for several years.

He was a member of Chicora VFW and Chicora American Legion. He also was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in North Oakland, Chicora.

He married Dorothy G. Young Ryan, who died Dec. 15, 2015.

He is survived by five daughters, Darlene and Dennis Geibel of Chicora, Brenda and Brian Werner of Chicora and Florida, Marsha and Mark Sanders of Grove City, Ohio, Lisa and Tim Wahler of Butler and Amy Spatig of Butler; five sons, Charles D. and Pearl Ryan of Chicora, Dennis and Rita Ryan of Fenelton, Bradley and Susan Ryan of Butler, Joe Dee and Tanya Ryan of Chicora and Todd and Julie Ryan of Butler; 23 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren

He also is survived by his sisters, Rosemary Wagner of Butler and Mary Jane and George Crawford of Florida; and his brothers, Donald Ryan of Fairview, Hugh Ryan of Sugar Creek Rest in Worthington and Regis and Mary Ryan of Nebraska.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Alan Ryan; and his brothers, Robert, James, Joseph, Arthur and William Ryan.

RYAN — Friends of Charles F. “Big Pop” Ryan, who died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, corner of 111 E. Slippery Rock and Main streets, Chicora.A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, North Oakland, with Rev. Rick Thompson, pastor, officiating.
