Robert R. “Bob” McGowan

Robert R. “Bob” McGowan

Robert R. “Bob” McGowan, 91, went home into the arms of his Lord on Thursday while under the care of the Passavant Abundant Life Center in Zelienople.

Born on Oct. 23, 1926, in Steubenville, Ohio, Bob was the son of the late Robert and Helen McGowan.

Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He retired from the military as a first lieutenant.

Bob studied at Washington and Jefferson College, graduating with a degree in economics. He worked for over 30 years in sales in the metals sector for Alcoa Corp.

Bob was a downhill skier, a runner and an avid Pittsburgh sports fan (Go Steelers!)

Bob loved to share stories of his adventures traveling with the military.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his three children, Robert “Andy” (Bonnie) McGowan of Houston, Texas, Matthew Reed (fiancée Lori Dysievick) McGowan of Pittsburgh and his daughter, Kristin DiVito of Pittsburgh; his two grandsons, Nathanial McGowan of Longmont, Colo., and Austin McGowan of Houston, Texas; and his former wife, Nancy Circle-McGowan of Houston, Texas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Marshall of Middlebury, Vt., and his sister, “Babe” McGowan of Steubenville, Ohio.

“In Celebration of the Life of Robert “Bob” McGowan, we the McGowan family sense a great peace with Dad right now as he is experiencing Oneness with God and in a way that is only his. We sense the celebration of a man who loved his family and friends and was enormously proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved to make us all laugh. We salute his sense of humor. He lived naturally like his ancestors did in a way that it was natural for him to be helpful and he did in a quiet and patient way. There is infinitely more depth to have known and to celebrate about Dad/Bob, but one thing we all celebrate as true: Bob had a good heart. We miss him!” — Nancy McGowan
