Wilma Jean Bates
Wilma Jean “Jean” (Saxman) Bates, 93, of Pineville, N.C., formerly of Butler, passed away Tuesday at the Haven Village at Carolina Place in Pineville, N.C.
She was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Dayton, Pa., to the late Charles A. Saxman and Bertha L. (Crawford) Saxman.
Jean was a 1939 graduate of Rural Valley High School. Then she went to Kittanning Business College. After business college, she graduated from the American Institute of Banking in Youngstown, Ohio.
Jean worked as a bookkeeper and teller for the Rural Valley National Bank in Rural Valley, Pa. She was a commercial bookkeeper for the Union Savings and Trust Co. in Warren, Ohio. She also worked part-time at The Hub Men’s Clothing Store in Butler for a number of years.
Jean was a member of the Butler Chapter 43, Order of the Eastern Star, the Blind Association of Butler and Armstrong Counties. She was also a life member of the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club and the Tanglewood Center. Jean was a member of the Summit Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Jean is survived by one daughter, Carole Rae Bertino and her husband, Richard, of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Domenick and Joseph Bertino; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Michael Bertino; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Bates Sr., who she married on Aug. 24, 1946, and who passed away on Nov. 18, 1985; one son, James A. Bates Jr.; three brothers, Robert T., Blair E. and Russell A. Saxman; and one sister, Olive M. Wilson.
BATES — There will be no public visitation for Wilma Jean “Jean” Bates, who died Tuesday, June 9, 2015.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Summit Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 181 Caldwell Drive, Butler, with the Rev. Tom Jones of Summit Evangelical Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Summit Church Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.
