Newell W. 'Buck' Walter, former mayor of Harrisville

Newell W. "Buck" Walter, 75, of West Prairie Street in Harrisville died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday at the UPMC Northwest Medical Center-Seneca after a brief illness. He was admitted to UPMC on July 6.

Born Aug. 16, 1931, in Clinton Township, Venango County, he was the son of John Earl and Thelma M. Coast Walter.

He was a 1949 graduate of Clintonville High School and retired in 1997 as branch manager of Drennings Delivery Service, Harrisville, after 48 years. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 211 of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Walter served on the Harrisville Borough Council for four years and was the mayor for 18 years.

He was a lifetime member of the Barkeyville United Methodist Church, where he was a deacon and served on the cemetery association for 39 years as secretary/treasurer.

He served in the Army from Nov. 10, 1952, to Oct. 16, 1954, in the 1795 Tank Co., 102 Infantry, RO 87, in Germany. He was a member of the 409th Army Reserve in Franklin and the 430th MP Detachment (CID), Erie, from January 1968 to October 1976 and retired as a staff sergeant.

He was a life member and past commander of the Meals-Hoffman American Legion Post 912 in Clintonville and was a member of the VFW Post 464 in Oil City.

He was a member of the Breakfast Club, which was made up of former Drennings employees of Harrisville. He enjoyed hunting and being with his family and friends.

He married Emma A. Ciochetto, Sept 23, 1961; and she survives along two daughters, Debi K. Barr and her husband, Terry, and Sharone A. Walter, all of Harrisville; two grandchildren, Sondra N. and Stephen J. Barr of Harrisville; and a brother-in-law, the Rev. Edwin McElroy of New Castle.

A sister, Doris E. Walter McElroy, preceded him in death.

<B>WALTER </B>— Friends of Newell W. "Buck" Walter, who died Saturday, July 28, 2007, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home</B>, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville. Visitation also will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Barkeyville United Methodist Church, where services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stephanie Thompson officiating. His brother-in-law, the Rev. Edwin McElroy, a retired United Methodist pastor, will assist. Burial will follow at the Barkeyville Cemetery with the military honors and flag presentation.Memorial contributions may be sent to the Barkeyville United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Sandy Grossman, 5420 Pittsburgh Road, Harrisville, PA. 16038.
