Robert M. Horner, ex-Heckett CEO
Robert M. Horner of Butler and a recent resident of Naples, Fla., left this world Wednesday to be with his heavenly Father.
Robert was born in Beaver Falls on Nov. 20, 1925, the fifth son of Herbert and Ethel Horner.
He was an honor graduate of Beaver Falls High School and then served in France and Germany during World War II.
After his Army war service, he enrolled in the Robert Morris School of Accounting in Pittsburgh and graduated with honors.
He worked for several years as a CPA with Main & Co. in Pittsburgh and then was employed as assistant treasurer at Kidd Drawn Steel until he joined the Heckett Engineering firm in Butler.
He retired as CEO and president of this international company.
Robert was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Butler and served in many leadership roles there before his retirement and move to Naples, Fla. There he was an active participant of Habitat for Humanity, which is the largest affiliate in the world.
He also volunteered with the Grace Place for Children and Families in Golden Gate City, Naples, and was an instructor for Stephen Ministries at the North Naples United Methodist Church, having trained 84 Stephen Ministers.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley; and his five children, Wesley of Massachusetts, Douglas of Tucson, Ariz., Dr. Bruce (Min) Horner of Louisville, Ky., Kay (Bob) Stephens of Slippery Rock and Trudy (Dru) Sedwick of Butler.
He also enjoyed special times with his grandchildren, Dr. Yvonne (Paul) Hsu of Salt Lake City, Utah, Luc Sedwick of Portales, N.M., Ali Sedwick of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Sierra Stephens of Slippery Rock and Cam Sedwick of Butler; and two great-grandchildren, Kai and Lee Thielking of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Robert has chosen to gift his body to the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, M.N., where he received tremendous care for pancreatic cancer in 2000.
HORNER — A memorial service for Robert M. Horner, who died on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eric Park and Pastor Tom Holman of First United Methodist Church, officiating.Arrangements are handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home of Butler.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 200 E.
