Three youths arrested at juvenile detention facility

State police arrested three young men for suspicion of inciting a riot this morning at Western PA Child Care on Route 38 in Allegheny Township.

The suspects -- two 18-year-olds and one 19-year-old -- allegedly broke out of their rooms shortly before 5:30 a.m. at the juvenile detention facility.

One of the men kicked out his door, breaking the jamb, police said. Another of the detainees used a shim to force open his door.

Police were called after the trio reportedly had gotten out of their room and were loose in the C pod at the center. One of the suspects was believed to be trying to get into an office.

Troopers from the Butler, Clarion and Franklin stations entered the secured facility for troubled youths and young adults armed with ballistic shields and batons and wearing protective helmets.

The three suspected escapees, who allegedly encouraged others to break out of their rooms, retreated into their own rooms once troopers swarmed the facility.

One of the suspects was found with a homemade weapon that police called a "shank."

Two ambulance crews were part of the initial call but no one was hurt.

Police took the three men to the barracks in Butler Township for questioning. Investigators said the trio was later booked into the Butler County Prison.

At least seven other detainees, all juveniles, were also removed this morning for unruly behavior. They were taken to another unspecified detention facility.

The arrests came only 12 hours after two dozen detainees brawled in the cafeteria and ganged up on staff members who tried to stop the melee.

Five staffers and two youths were injured and treated for the alleged riot that started about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police continue to investigate that incident and charges of aggravated assault, rioting and simple assault are pending against a number of the detainees, authorities said.

Telephone calls to Western PA Child Care were not immediately returned.
