Raiderthon raises $7,000 for Miracle League of Western PA
Raiderthon found a way to rebound and grow at the same time this year.
Seneca Valley Senior High School Student Council hosted its eighth annual Raiderthon on Friday as a fundraiser for the Miracle League of Southwestern PA.
This year the event raised more than $7,000, according to student council adviser Rebecca Beers.
Beers said before the COVID-19 pandemic, the event had raised between $10,000 and $20,000 annually. She said during the pandemic, the event raised about $3,000 each year, despite those student councils’ best efforts to adjust to strange circumstances.
This year, middle and intermediate school students and their families also were invited to attend. Beers said with this in mind, the student councils planning the event sought to make the festivities more family friendly.
“We really wanted to just bring the community together,” Beers said.
Students from Ryan Gloyer Middle School ran an escape room with multiple puzzles themed around fleeing from detention.
“They had a constant line. It was really successful,” Beers said.
Mario Kart was played in the lobby and a DJ led karaoke in the auditorium. In the gym, visitors played dodgeball and big ball volleyball.
The rest of the hall was set up like a carnival with games and grub, most of the latter being donated by local businesses.
“I thought that we had a really nice crowd,” Beers said. ”It was really for all ages for the first time.“
In the past, the event was organized mainly for 11th- and 12th-grade students. They had games in the gym and a dance, but the expanded activities were all new.
“I’m hoping to continue and build off what we did this year. I want to make it bigger and better.“
To help SV reach the goal, the student council has set up a GoFundMe account for donations: https://www.gofundme.com/f/svsd-2022-raiderthon.
