Dr. Jerome O'Malley
Dr. Jerome F. “Jerry” O'Malley of Zelienople, formerly of Scranton, was the much loved husband of Teresa; stepfather to John (Sharla) Barron and Timothy (Amanda) Barron; the grandfather of Jonathon, Tyler, Summer, Jamar and Jaron; brother to Irene (Thomas) Kelly, deceased, Frank (Pat) O'Malley, Nancy (Jim) Shildneck, Bobby (Mary Alice) O'Malley, John (Cathy) O'Malley, deceased, Patrick (Arta) O'Malley and Jane (Bob) Flynn.
Jerome passed on to be with the Lord on Feb. 21. He was 90 years of age. One of life's true scholars, he will be sadly missed by those who loved him.
Jerry graduated from Holy Rosary High and went on to Weston Jesuit Seminary in Weston, Mass., where he completed his training and became an ordained Jesuit priest in Woodstock, Md. He studied at Boston College, where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He received his doctorate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He was the first graduate student to receive a Ph.D. in the English department while at Duquesne. He taught at St. Joe Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Wheeling College in Wheeling, W.Va., and Loyola College in Baltimore, Md.
Jerry taught for 27 and one half years at Slippery Rock University, retiring in 1997. While at SRU, Jerry served as secretary to the president, dean and chairman of the English department and taught English, Latin, Greek and philosophy. Jerry not only ran the Latin program but he created it. He briefly taught in China and was a published authority on Sherlock Holmes and Latin hymnology.
He enjoyed reading mysteries, history, listening to jazz and traveling. He was a member of St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church, Zelienople.
He was also preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Catherine O'Malley; his parents, Frank and Francis O'Malley; and his beloved cat, Fingal.
O'MALLEY — A Mass of Christian burial for Dr. Jerome F. “Jerry” O'Malley, who died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church.
