Michael Monday

Michael Monday

Michael David Monday, 60, of the City of Butler passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at Butler Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Born on April 23, 1960, in New Kensington, he was the son of Nicholas A. Monday and the late Patricia F. “Patsy” (Donati) Monday.

Michael graduated from Butler High School, Class of 1979, and from Edinboro University in 1984, with a degree in business.

Michael was honored to be the third generation to operate and co-own Monday’s Shoes in downtown Butler. He took great pride to bring quality goods and personal fitting to his clients. Michael loved fitting a child’s first pair of walking shoes, and the child loved how Michael made it special with his infectious smile and excitement.

He retired from the store at the end of 2020. Early in his career, he was active in the Downtown Butler Association, helping with events and the annual hanging of the Christmas lights.

He was a member of St. Michael Church.

On July 4, 1992, he married the love of his life, Karen (Humphreys) Monday. This would become the shoe store’s week for family vacations, always over the Fourth of July holiday. This began their love of traveling. They would travel at first searching for antiques, and then for the fun of traveling to new places.

Michael loved meeting new people, watching the fireworks from all over the country, but his favorites were Bar Harbor, Maine, Kanab, Utah, Brattleboro, Vt., and Charleston, W.Va. It was a goal in retirement to visit as many national parks as they could, and to travel and camp with his cousin and her husband, Judy and Bob Meyers.

His greatest enjoyment came from being with his family and friends, (and friends soon became like family). Michael loved sitting around a campfire, or on the deck talking about the Steelers, sites he saw while traveling, and what national park he and Karen would try next.

Michael’s glowing smile and his excitement to see you and greet you will be missed by so many.

Michael is survived by his wife of 28 years, Karen; his father, Nick Monday; two brothers and their wives, Christopher and Barb Monday and Peter and Denise Monday, all of Butler; his mother-in-law, Carol (Nulph) Humphreys McEvoy of Butler; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Rick and Mollie Humphreys of Oklahoma, and Ed and Sandy Humphreys of Washington state; his very special friends, Michael J. and Terri Katula and their son, Michael G. Katula, and Ken and Sandy Cook and their daughter, Sarah Cook; and numerous nieces and nephews.

MONDAY — There will be no public visitation for Michael David Monday, who died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.

A private Panachyda will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Father Douglas Lorance, pastor of St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Butler.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Michael’s life to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 146 N. Monroe St., Butler, PA 16001, or to the Butler County Humane Society, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew, PA 16053.
