Suspected bank robber remains in county prison
A Butler Township man who confessed to robbing a downtown Butler bank last week remains in the Butler County Prison today on $125,000 bail.
Cyrus V. Smith, 32, confessed that he robbed the Citizens Bank branch April 7, according to testimony at his hearing Monday.
Butler police Capt. David Dalcamo testified that Smith “admitted to robbing” the bank. The alleged admission — two days after the heist — was made during an audio and video recorded interview at the city police station.
Dalcamo’s testimony came at the end of Smith’s preliminary hearing before District Judge Pete Shaffer.
Shaffer ordered Smith held for court on a charge of robbery.
Also at the hearing, a teller at the bank at 301 N. Main St. pointed at Smith as the man who robbed him a week ago.
Adam Hunia, a teller/manager at the bank, said he had just finished a transaction with a customer and was straightening up his cash drawer about 10 a.m. April 7 when a man walked in.
The man, later identified as Smith, handed Hunia a handwritten note.
“It said empty my drawer, no alarms, he didn’t want to a hurt anyone and he had a gun,” Hunia told prosecutor Richard Bosco, a county assistant district attorney.
He told Smith’s attorney, public defender Kimberly Hudak, that he never saw her client with a gun.
After Hunia put several stacks of currency in the bag, the robber stated, “that’s good.” Hunia said he handed the bag back to the suspect, who left.
He didn’t know how much he had placed in the bag. Why not? Bosco asked.
“I was scared,” Hunia replied.
He said the bank later determined $3,095 was taken.
