Man faces third DUI charge after serious wreck
ADAMS TWP — Police charged a Callery man with his third DUI Thursday after he nearly died two months ago in a crash on Mars Evans City Road.
Matthew Wyzykowski, 35, of Callery is charged with causing an accident involving injury, DUI; DUI: third offense; driving with a suspended license; and other traffic offenses.
Police responded March 10 to reports of a single-vehicle crash on Mars Evans City Road around 10:19 p.m.
Responders arrived on the scene to find the vehicle smashed into a tree with heavy damage and Wyzykowski unconscious and trapped inside.
Firefighters cut him out of the vehicle and airlifted him to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Police and responders reported an odor of alcohol in the vehicle and coming from Wyzykowski.
Officers also found that his license was suspended and that he had been arrested twice in the past for driving while intoxicated.
Police later determined that the car crashed after striking a guardrail and breaking it, then traveling up a small hill and into a large tree.
At the hospital, blood analysis showed Wyzykowski's blood alcohol concentration at 0.26 percent, more than three times the legal limit.
Wyzykowski sustained serious injuries in the crash, requiring emergency surgery to repair a damaged artery and stop the bleeding.
He required numerous blood transfusions after his blood pressure dipped dangerously low en route to the hospital.
Wyzykowski suffered broken bones, a dislocated hip and damage to his esophagus, according to the police report.
Physicians noted they could not complete a full “review of systems” on Wyzykowski due to his “critical status and intoxication.”
Hearings have yet to be scheduled.
