Marilyn B. Stroup Smith Purdum
Marilyn B. Stroup Smith Purdum, 83, of Lumar Village, Butler, went to be with the Lord Wednesday morning at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler.
Marilyn was born on Feb. 26, 1931, in Kaylor. She was the daughter of the late Earl M. and Twila Beryle Hepler Stroup.
She was a 1949 graduate of Fairview Township-Karns City High School.
In her earlier years, she was employed by the Rex Hide Corp. in East Brady and later by the Bon Ton in Butler.
She was a longtime member of the Karns City United Methodist Church and a member of the Who Do Sunday school class. She participated in ladies' card club for many years and was a member of the Armco Ladies Golf League as well as the Thursday morning “Spices” bowling league.
Marilyn enjoyed the company of her family and was a very proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Her grandchildren were the light of her life.
She was first married on Dec. 7, 1950, to Robert J. Smith. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on April 2, 1972. In June of 1976, she married James W. Purdum Sr. Mr. Purdum died on April 26, 1986.
Surviving are her two sons, Michael G. “Snuffy” Smith and his wife, Pamela, of Chicora and Mark “Tim” Smith and his wife, Tammy, of Butler; her five grandchildren, Jeremy Smith and his wife, Deana, of Carmichaels, Joshua Smith and his wife, Nikki, of Chicora, Jessica Dietrich and her husband, Tim, of Lyndora, Makenzie Schulz and her husband, Andy, of Washington, D.C., and Timothy Smith and his fiancee, Rachel Horne, of Farmington Hills, Mich.; her three great-granddaughters, Ava and Sophia Smith of Carmichaels and Cassidy Nolan of Chicora; her four great-grandsons, Caden Dietrich of Lyndora, Ike Schulz of Washington, D.C., and Kyle and Mason Nolan of Chicora; her sister, Alice C. Morrow and her husband, Ben, of Butler; her two sisters-in-law, Betty Smith McCall of Petrolia and Florence Stroup of California, as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Dale Stroup and Tom Stroup; her sister, Thelma Fennell, and a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Stroup Smith Purdum, who passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at theHile Funeral Home of Karns City, 128 Main St., Karns City.A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Lewis, pastor of the Karns City United Methodist Church, officiating.
