Center Twp. man faces trial in fatal crash

A Center Township man was ordered held for court today on vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and six traffic charges in a 2006 wreck that killed a woman.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton issued the order for Joseph D. Shuler, 22.

Shuler was warned to slow down just before he crashed his friend's sports car into a tree, utility pole and house in the September 2006, according to testimony at the preliminary hearing.

He was driving more than 90 mph through a residential neighborhood in the township when he lost control of the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, a state police accident reconstruction expert testified.

Killed in the crash was 23-year-old pediatric nurse Shirley Smith of Washington Township.

Police said the crash occurred because Shuler was speeding and ran a stop sign on Sunset Road about 11:35 p.m.

Smith, a backseat passenger, was pronounced dead less than an hour later at Butler Memorial Hospital. Shuler and Smith's boyfriend, Ian Donaldson, 24, formerly of Center Township, a front seat passenger, suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The car after slamming into a utility pole and tree, ended up against a house, about 280 feet from the point where Shuler lost control, said Cpl. David Fries, an accident reconstructionist.

Fries said that based on his investigation, the car was traveling 91 mph just before it left the road.

Police said weather or road conditions were not factors in the crash. The investigation later found no mechanical problems with the car.
