George A. Timblin
George Alvin Timblin, 65, of Mint Hill, N.C., entered the church triumphant on Sept. 1 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Jan. 29, 1941, in Butler County, he was the son of the late William Cecil and Beulah Rankin Timblin.
Surviving are his loving wife of 37 years, Carol Lowe Timblin; a son, Brandon Timblin and his wife, Risa, of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Alison Timblin of Charlotte, N.C.; and grandsons, Justin, Michael, Weslee and Andre.
He also is survived by a sister, Hazel Timblin Townsend and her husband, Earle, of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Stanley Timblin and his wife, Evelyn, of Greensboro, N.C.; nephews, Jeff Timblin, Steve (Kathy) Timblin and Walter (Barbara) Townsend; nieces, Susan Townsend, Dianne (Jamie) Lewis and Sara (Alan) Luchuk; several great-nieces and great-nephews; many cousins, and countless friends who loved him dearly.
Mr. Timblin attended Butler County schools until he moved with his family to Durham County, N.C., in 1953. After graduating from Northern High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1962 and a Master of Education degree from UNC-Charlotte in 1975.
Following his graduation from Duke, he worked for a year as a junior test engineer for the Duquesne Light Co., Pittsburgh. From 1963 until 1966, he was a design engineer on NASA's Saturn V booster rocket for the moon shot at The Boeing Co. in New Orleans, La.
During 1966-1970, he was a senior aircraft instrumentation engineer on the C-5A and C-141A projects at Lockheed-Georgia Co., Marietta, Ga.
In 1970, he joined the faculty of Central Piedmont Community College as an electrical and electronics engineering technology instructor. During his 31-year career there, he had many leadership roles, including program director and division director and assistant dean in the Engineering Technologies Division.
When he retired in 2001, he was interim dean of the Engineering and Transportation Technologies Department. His contributions to CPCC were myriad, including leading the development of the Advanced Technologies Center and the Apprenticeship 2000 program. He received CPCC's Administrator of the Year Award in 1990 and the CIM Leadership Award from IBM Corp. in 1994.
Throu-ghout his distinguished career, Mr. Timblin served in numerous leadership positions of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and in 2001 was elected a Fellow Member. He received the James H. McGraw Award in Engineering Technology Education from ASEE in 1993 and the ETDA/ASEE Recognition Award from ASEE in 2002.
He also was president and board member of the Charlotte Engineers Club and in 1996 received its Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
As a special consultant, Mr. Timblin worked on projects for several colleges and universities and numerous national organizations, including the National Science Foundation, the American Association of Community Colleges, ABET Technological Initiative, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Though his accomplishments were monumental, Mr. Timblin remained a kind, gentle and unselfish person. He will be remembered best for his beautiful smile, his generous and courageous spirit, his love and devotion to his family, friends, church and community, his appreciation of history, his keen sense of humor and his enjoyment of music, nature, photography and train travel. He led an exemplary life and touched the lives of everyone he met.
Mr. Timblin was a long-time member of the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church and was active in the Mint Hill Historical Society. Over the past three years, he led the ongoing restoration of the church's two historic cemeteries.

Lee Koontz officiating.
