Thomas White Eichelberger, 81, died early Tuesday in the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.

Born March 16, 1925, in Denver, Colo., Mr. White moved to Atlantic Beach two years ago from Butler.

He enlisted in the Navy following his junior year of high school and served as an aviation mechanic. Under the Navy's V-12 Officer Training Program, he attended a year at the University of Colorado and finished his degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Texas in 1946, receiving a commission as an ensign.

He moved to Pittsburgh where he was married to his wife of 55 years, reared three children, served his church, led in scouting and Rotary, completed two degrees in metallurgy and business at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and became a Steelers' fan — all while working in a variety of challenging and responsible research and manufacturing positions.

Tom is survived by his wife, Evelyn; a daughter, Carol (Richard) Newell of Butler; sons, Bob (Francie) of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Paul (Donna) of Mt. Airy, Md.; a sister, Lois Pumphrey; a nephew, John Gebhardt of Denver, Colo., and seven grandchildren.

<B>EICHELBERGER</B> — A memorial service for Thomas White Eichelberger, who died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, will be held this summer at the Laurel Hill State Park in Somerset County.In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.Arrangements were handled by <B>Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home</B>, Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
