Dorothy Demaco

Dorothy Mae Damico, 86, of Cabot passed away Monday at Good Samaritan Hospice.

She was born on May 1, 1927, in Harmarville, the daughter of the late John A. and Beulah (Stear) Lawson.

Dorothy was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Butler. Her friends at church were a comfort and strength during her illness.

She was a 1944 graduate of Butler High School and received an associate's degree in communications from Duquesne.

She met the love of her life when she met her Air Force sweetheart, Robert James Damico. They wrote to each other daily for more than 3 years until he came home. They had their church wedding on Jan. 1, 1947, a day with 3 feet of snow on the ground.

She retired after 15 years from the Nationwide Insurance Co.

During her convalescence after cancer surgery, she went to Median School on dialysis training and worked for the Dialysis Center of Butler Hospital. She and her husband retired together and both went to work in management at Lake View Court in Saxonburg for 23 years, managing 30 townhouses.

She will be remembered by her family and friends as the baker of excellent pies and cakes and hundreds of Christmas cookies they shared at Christmas with many elderly friends.

Dorothy loved working in her flower garden and sharing her flowers with friends and family. Her family meant so much to her.

She was Notch Baby Chairman of Western Pennsylvania and her biggest thrill was addressing a Notch Baby March in Washington D.C. on the steps of the Capitol.

Those she touched truly learned the meaning of love. She is now with her Savior and her wonderful husband forever.

Dorothy was a member of the Golden Agers, the Girls Club, the Eastern Star Maqueda Chapter and the Acacia Club.

She had been a 911 operator and volunteered at BMH for many years. She also enjoyed flowers, traveling and volunteering for her friends.

Surviving are her two sons, Robert J. (Naomi) Damico Sr. and John H. Damico Sr., both of Butler; her four grandsons, Robert “Rob” (Crystal) Damico Jr. of Butler, John H. “Jack” (Terra) Damico Jr. of West Sunbury, Donald Damico of Butler and Chad Damico of Saxonburg; her three great-grandsons, Nicholas, Alec and Austin; her two sisters, Ruth Robinson and Mrs. Sylvester (Lois) Kapalka, both of Butler; her brother, James E. (JoAnn) Lawson of Butler; her three sisters-in-law, Mary Lawson, Lois Conrad and Jeanne Lawson, all of Butler; many nieces and nephews, and one very special niece, Valerie Kapalka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, who died Sept. 2, 2006; her three brothers, Thomas, John and William Lawson, and her brother-in-law, James Robinson.
