William J. Cully, business leader
William J. Cully, 85, of Renfrew passed away Saturday at his residence. He lived in Penn Township.
Born in Pittsburgh, Oct. 1, 1924, he was the son of the late John and Mary Cully.
He was devoted to his family, his company, his community and the University of Pittsburgh. He attended West View High School, now known as North Hills, graduating in 1942.
Mr. Cully enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1942, received his pilot's wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant and was assigned to the 100th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force in Thorpe Abbott, England. While assigned to the 100th BG, he completed 34 missions as a pilot in the European theater. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 and in the Air Corps Reserve in 1955 and 1956.
He entered the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in the school of arts and sciences in 1949.
Mr. Cully was very active in the Butler area. He was a founder of the Penn Valley Swim Club. From 1969 to 1981, he served on the South Butler County School Board and was its president for six years. He also served on the Penn Township Zoning Board and the Tri-County Workforce Investment Board, the Butler County Airport Authority, the Tri-County Career Track Board, was parade chairman for the Butler County Bicentennial in 2000 and also served on the Board of the Community Development Corporation of Butler County.
He was a member of the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Board, where he was awarded director emeritus. He also served on the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Advisory Committee. For more than 35 years, he was a member of the Team Pittsburgh Athletics Organization. He also was an ardent supporter of the University of Pittsburgh Band. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association and a past member of the University Club. Mr. Cully also was a member and president of the 100th Bomb Group Foundation.
He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, a life member of VFW Post 249 and a member of the Butler County Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Cully was president of the United Plate Glass Co. in Butler County from 1981 to the present.
Surviving are two sons, Michael W. Cully and his wife, Joyce, of Renfrew and Bartley J. Cully of Renfrew; a brother, Ronald Cully of the North Hills; and four grandchildren, Ryan, Jennifer, Kristen and Nikki Cully.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Crozier Cully, who passed away June 23, 2008; and by one brother, Jack Cully of the North Hills.

Cully, who died Saturday, June 5, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the <B>Martin Funeral Home</B>, 429 Center Ave., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday from the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. Everyone please meet at the church.
